How the case totals were assembled

AARO’s annual reporting combines reports from military personnel, intelligence organisations and other government sources. Cases are not limited to newly observed events. Each reporting cycle may also include historical incidents that were submitted late or transferred from earlier databases, meaning the total number of reports is not the same as the number of new sightings during a single year. What resolved cases were identified as

The strongest pattern in AARO’s published dataset is that resolved cases consistently receive conventional explanations. As additional evidence is collected, reports have been attributed to:

  • Commercial and military aircraft.
  • Balloons, including research and weather balloons.
  • Uncrewed aerial systems (drones).
  • Birds and other airborne wildlife.
  • Satellites and other space objects.
  • Atmospheric effects or optical phenomena.
  • Sensor artefacts, processing errors or misinterpretation of infrared imagery.

Successive reporting periods have produced the same overall trend. Why unresolved cases are not confirmed anomalies

A common misunderstanding is that unresolved cases represent evidence of extraordinary technology. AARO explicitly rejects that interpretation. According to its assessments, most unresolved reports lack critical information such as accurate range, altitude, speed, sensor calibration, environmental conditions or multiple independent observations.
