Roswell centres on the recovery of physical debris without a verified close observation of the alleged craft. Socorro, by contrast, revolves around an unusually detailed close-range eyewitness account supported by limited physical traces, but without any recovered object. Lonnie Zamora’s Close-Range Account
On 24 April 1964, Socorro police officer Lonnie Zamora was pursuing a speeding vehicle when he heard a loud roar and saw what he initially believed might be an explosion. Investigating the source, he reported seeing a light-coloured, egg-shaped object resting on the ground with two small figures standing nearby. As he approached, the object emitted a loud roar and flame, rose into the air and departed at high speed. Several features distinguish Socorro from Roswell.

Project Blue Book devoted considerable effort to investigating the case. Scientific consultant J. Allen Hynek regarded Zamora as a credible witness and later described Socorro as one of the strongest unexplained reports he examined during his work with the programme. How Socorro’s Ground Traces Compare
Socorro is sometimes described as combining eyewitness testimony with physical evidence, but the nature of that evidence differs sharply from Roswell.
Investigators documented several features at the landing site, including:

Those who regard Roswell as stronger point to the existence of tangible debris and documented military recovery operations. Skeptics counter that the material itself has been extensively explained by official investigations and that no authenticated sample supports claims of exotic technology.
The result is an unusual evidential trade-off:

Why Neither Case Has a Complete Evidence Chain
From an evidential perspective, both incidents remain incomplete.
Socorro lacks:
- recoverable artefacts;
- independent photographs of the object;
- instrumented measurements such as radar or sensor data.
Roswell lacks:
- a well-documented observation of the alleged crash;
- publicly verified anomalous materials;
- an uninterrupted chain of custody linking any recovered object to an unknown craft.
Because each case is missing a different part of the evidential chain, neither satisfies the standard expected for demonstrating an extraordinary claim. Modern investigators often describe this as the difference between a compelling witness case and a compelling forensic case. Socorro approaches the former, while Roswell is remembered for claims of the latter.
This distinction explains why the two incidents continue to be compared. Rather than reinforcing one another, they illustrate complementary weaknesses: Socorro asks whether an exceptionally credible witness can outweigh the absence of recoverable evidence, while Roswell asks whether disputed debris can outweigh the absence of a verified observation.
