Introduction
Beginning in 1989, Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt transformed the Roswell story from a claim about unusual debris on a ranch into a far broader narrative involving multiple recovery sites, a damaged craft, recovered bodies and an extensive military containment operation. Their work, based largely on hundreds of witness interviews, became one of the most influential reinterpretations of the case. At the same time, it also became one of its most disputed, because many of the key claims depended on late recollections, second-hand testimony and witnesses whose credibility was later challenged. Launching the reinvestigation
Randle, a retired military officer and prolific UFO researcher, partnered with Donald Schmitt through the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) after Stanton Friedman’s initial rediscovery of the Roswell case had revived public interest. Rather than relying primarily on the small number of witnesses already known, they undertook a systematic effort to locate military personnel, civilians, family members and others who claimed some connection with the events of July 1947.
Their approach differed from earlier investigators in both scale and ambition. By the early 1990s they reported interviewing hundreds of individuals, attempting to compare overlapping recollections rather than building the case around only a handful of principal witnesses. The investigators argued that numerous apparently minor recollections—transport details, security measures, rumours within the base and recollections from local civilians—could be combined into a coherent reconstruction of events. Adding the second crash site and recovered bodies
The most significant expansion introduced by Randle and Schmitt was the idea that Roswell involved two separate locations rather than a single debris field.
According to their reconstruction:
- the familiar Foster Ranch site contained scattered lightweight debris;
- a second location several miles away held the main wreckage;
- the principal site allegedly included an intact or partially intact craft;
- non-human bodies were reportedly recovered there before military units sealed the area.
This two-site model attempted to reconcile earlier accounts describing only debris with later testimony referring to bodies and a largely intact vehicle. A central influence on this reconstruction came from stories associated with engineer Barney Barnett, whose alleged account of encountering a crashed disc and bodies circulated only after his death. Another important addition came through funeral director Glenn Dennis, interviewed in 1989. Dennis claimed Roswell Army Air Field had contacted him about unusually small coffins and methods of preserving damaged bodies. He also described conversations with a nurse who allegedly witnessed an examination of non-human corpses.
These accounts greatly influenced the popular image of Roswell as involving alien bodies rather than merely mysterious wreckage. Reconstructing a military recovery
Randle and Schmitt’s version also greatly expanded the logistics of the alleged recovery operation.
Instead of a straightforward retrieval of balloon debris, they described:
- multiple military recovery teams;
- armed security around recovery areas;
- transportation of wreckage by aircraft to other bases;
- strict compartmentalisation so few participants understood the overall operation;
- intimidation or secrecy imposed on witnesses.
This reconstruction explained why different witnesses described different pieces of the event while also providing a mechanism for the absence of surviving official documentation. Managing contradictions and rejected witnesses
One notable feature of Randle’s later work is that he did not simply continue adding testimony indefinitely. Over time he publicly reassessed a number of witnesses previously regarded as important.
He acknowledged that some accounts were exaggerated, internally inconsistent or unsupported by records. Glenn Dennis, for example, remained influential in Roswell literature, but Randle later expressed doubts about aspects of his testimony after problems emerged with names, dates and corroborating evidence. In Roswell in the 21st Century, Randle argued that the strongest version of the case required discarding weaker witnesses rather than defending every claim made over previous decades. Why their work changed Roswell permanently
Whether accepted or rejected, Randle and Schmitt fundamentally altered how Roswell is discussed.
Before their investigation, the modern story largely centred on Jesse Marcel’s claim that unusual debris had been recovered from a ranch. After their books, the dominant popular narrative increasingly featured:
- a debris field and a separate crash site;
- recovered extraterrestrial bodies;
- military transport of craft and biological remains;
- numerous civilian and military witnesses;
- an extensive, long-term government cover-up.
