Introduction

Several characteristics appear repeatedly in these later accounts:
- The markings were described as decorative rather than alphabetic.
- Witnesses often recalled pink, purple or violet colouring.
- The designs were said to appear on tape attached to lightweight structural members rather than engraved into metal.
- No witness produced a contemporaneous sketch from 1947 showing an unknown writing system.
These details matter because they describe markings applied to construction materials rather than inscriptions built into a manufactured object.
What Mogul personnel recalled about target tape
The Air Force’s 1994 investigation interviewed surviving Project Mogul participants, including engineer Charles B. Moore and Albert Trakowski. The mechanism proposed by the Mogul explanation is straightforward:
- Radar reflectors were assembled from foil-covered panels supported by lightweight balsa frames.
- Decorative adhesive tape reinforced seams and joints.
- When the reflector broke apart after landing or impact, fragments of tape remained attached to sticks and foil.
- Decades later, witnesses remembering unusual coloured patterns could understandably describe them as unfamiliar symbols or “hieroglyphics.”
This explanation does not require witnesses to have invented the markings. Instead, it argues that they accurately remembered an unusual but entirely terrestrial manufacturing detail.
Why ordinary tape could become extraordinary memory
Human memory does not preserve every feature of an event equally. Distinctive, unexpected details often survive longest while surrounding context fades.
Decorative floral tape would have been highly unusual on military equipment in 1947. Someone expecting plain engineering materials might later remember colourful abstract designs while forgetting exactly where they appeared or why they were there.
