Introduction
Walter Haut’s posthumous affidavit occupies a distinctive place in the Roswell body-recovery debate because it came from the officer who issued the famous 8 July 1947 press release announcing that the Army Air Field had recovered a “flying disc”. Unlike earlier Roswell body stories, Haut’s final affidavit claimed that he personally saw both an unusual craft and small humanoid bodies inside a secure hangar at Roswell Army Air Field. Because the document was signed in 2002 but sealed until after his death in 2005, supporters regard it as unusually candid testimony given without concern for personal consequences. Critics, however, argue that its timing, the evolution of Haut’s earlier statements, and the absence of independent corroboration significantly reduce its evidential value. What the sealed affidavit claimed
The affidavit, signed in December 2002 and first published in Witness to Roswell in 2007 after Haut’s death, presents a detailed narrative that went far beyond his public role as the base public information officer. According to the document, Colonel William Blanchard personally escorted Haut into a guarded hangar after the initial press release had been issued. There, Haut claimed he observed:

- Several small bodies, roughly child-sized, partly concealed beneath a tarpaulin.
- Senior officers treating the recovery as an event requiring exceptional secrecy.

Leading interviews and changing details
The sealed affidavit did not emerge in isolation. During his final years Haut participated in interviews with UFO researchers, including recordings that were likewise intended for release only after his death. These later interviews have themselves become part of the credibility debate. Researchers sympathetic to Roswell interpret the progression as evidence that Haut gradually became willing to discuss experiences he had long suppressed because of promises made to Colonel Blanchard.
Other investigators reach a different conclusion. Even Kevin Randle, who spent decades investigating Roswell from a generally pro-investigation perspective, has written that Haut’s public story remained limited for decades before expanding substantially in his later years. How much weight should the affidavit carry?
The affidavit is often presented as one of the strongest body-recovery documents because of Haut’s position in 1947. He unquestionably occupied an official role at Roswell Army Air Field and was responsible for distributing the original “flying disc” press release. That gives his testimony greater historical relevance than anonymous or purely second-hand accounts.
Nevertheless, several factors limit its evidential strength.
First, the affidavit was created approximately fifty-five years after the events it describes. Psychological research consistently shows that detailed autobiographical memories can change substantially over such long periods, particularly after repeated discussion and exposure to later narratives.
Second, the affidavit introduces claims absent from Haut’s earlier sworn statement and from many decades of interviews. Such substantial expansion requires independent corroboration if historians are to treat it as reliable evidence.
Third, the document has not been supported by contemporaneous military records, photographs, physical evidence, or additional independent witnesses whose accounts clearly match Haut’s description of the same hangar scene.
