Finding Jesse Marcel in 1978
Roswell’s revival began almost by chance. While waiting for a television interview in Baton Rouge in February 1978, Friedman was told about a retired Air Force officer who had claimed to have handled the wreckage of a “flying saucer” in 1947. That officer was Jesse Marcel, the former intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group at Roswell Army Air Field.
Marcel was not simply another local witness. In 1947 he had been directly involved in collecting debris from rancher W. W. “Mac” Brazel’s property and transporting it through military channels. His documented role gave him unusual credibility compared with many later Roswell witnesses. Turning one interview into a wider investigation
Instead of relying solely on Marcel’s recollections, Friedman began tracing other people who might have been connected with the 1947 recovery. His approach combined several strands of research:

- comparing contemporary press accounts with later witness testimony;
- searching for surviving documentation relating to the incident; and

Why the late testimony remained disputed
The strongest criticism of Friedman’s rediscovery concerns timing rather than Marcel’s identity. Marcel was unquestionably involved in the original military response, but he first publicly described extraordinary debris more than thirty years after the event.
