The Air Force also argued that eyewitness descriptions of foil, sticks, rubber and electronic components broadly matched equipment used in Mogul arrays. Why the missing flight remains central

The significance of the 4 June sonobuoy launch extends beyond a single balloon experiment. It illustrates the broader historical challenge of reconstructing classified Cold War programmes from incomplete archives.

If Crary’s diary is interpreted as documenting a limited but genuine launch, Flight 4 offers a plausible mechanism by which classified balloon debris could have reached the Roswell area. If, however, the diary is interpreted as showing that the relevant launch never occurred, one of the Air Force’s principal explanations for the Roswell debris becomes substantially weaker.

For that reason, the debate over Flight 4 is less about whether Project Mogul existed—which is well documented—than about whether this specific, poorly documented launch can legitimately be identified as the source of the debris recovered in New Mexico.
