Why Roswell’s later fame differs from its contemporary importance

Roswell’s extraordinary prominence today developed decades after the original event.

For much of the 1950s and 1960s, other UFO incidents attracted far greater official attention within Blue Book because they involved ongoing witness reports, radar observations or military encounters. Roswell, by contrast, attracted relatively little public discussion after 1947.

The situation changed dramatically from the late 1970s onward, when investigators interviewed former military personnel and civilians whose recollections revived interest in the incident. Books and television documentaries transformed Roswell from a largely forgotten newspaper story into the best-known alleged UFO crash in history.
