Introduction
Glenn Dennis became one of the most influential witnesses in the Roswell alien-body narrative because he linked alleged recovered bodies to activity at the Roswell Army Air Field hospital rather than to the debris field itself. A mortuary worker employed by Ballard Funeral Home in 1947, Dennis claimed that military personnel telephoned him to ask about small hermetically sealed coffins and methods for preserving badly decomposed bodies. He further alleged that a military nurse privately described seeing the autopsy of several non-human bodies before mysteriously disappearing. These claims became central to later books about recovered alien bodies. However, decades of investigation have failed to verify the nurse’s identity, the alleged transfers, or any hospital documentation supporting Dennis’s account. The coffin and preservation requests
Dennis stated that, during the period of the Roswell incident in July 1947, personnel from Roswell Army Air Field contacted the funeral home where he worked. According to his recollections, they asked:
- What was the smallest hermetically sealed coffin available?
- How quickly could such coffins be obtained?
- How should bodies that had been exposed to the desert for an extended period be preserved?
- Would embalming chemicals alter the composition of body tissues?
Dennis said these enquiries struck him as unusual because the questions seemed more detailed than those associated with ordinary military fatalities. He later argued that they were connected to the recovery of alien bodies.
The enquiries themselves have often been treated differently from Dennis’s broader narrative. Researchers generally accept that Dennis genuinely worked for Ballard Funeral Home and that it held a contract to provide mortuary services for the Roswell base. However, no surviving military document links the telephone calls to extraterrestrial remains, and there is no record that the requested child-sized hermetically sealed coffins were ever ordered or delivered. The nurse identity problem
The most dramatic part of Dennis’s account concerned a nurse whom he said worked at the Roswell Army Air Field hospital.
According to Dennis, she told him that she had unexpectedly entered a room where unfamiliar doctors were conducting preliminary examinations of three small bodies. He described her account as including unusual anatomical features such as oversized heads and large eyes, together with an overpowering odour that allegedly forced the examinations to be moved elsewhere on the base. The difficulty is that this witness has never been independently identified.
Early interviews named the nurse as “Naomi Maria Selff” (or similar spellings), but investigators could find no military nurse by that name assigned to Roswell or, indeed, serving in the US armed forces. Dennis later acknowledged that the name was false, explaining that he had deliberately concealed her identity because he had promised not to reveal it. - the nurse was transferred immediately after the incident;
- he later received a letter from her sent from England;
- attempts to reply failed because the letter was returned;
- he was subsequently told she had died in an aircraft accident.
Investigators searched military personnel records and available reports relating to these claims without finding evidence that matched this sequence of events. What hospital records would need to show
Because Dennis’s story centres on a military hospital, it lends itself to documentary testing more readily than many other Roswell claims.
If the events had occurred substantially as described, investigators would reasonably expect to find at least some combination of:
- personnel records showing an unusual reassignment of medical staff;
- hospital duty rosters identifying the doctors and nurses involved;
- admission or pathology records for unidentified bodies;
- transport records documenting movement of remains;
- supply records reflecting unusual mortuary or pathology activity;
- correspondence relating to exceptional security measures.

Why Dennis’s account remains controversial
Dennis did not emerge as a public Roswell witness until more than forty years after the alleged events. By then, Roswell had already become the best-known UFO case in the United States, and stories involving recovered bodies had begun circulating widely.
Supporters of Dennis argue that:
- he had genuine access to the Roswell base through his funeral home work;
- some aspects of his employment history are independently confirmed;
- his coffin enquiries are sufficiently unusual to deserve attention.
Critics respond that the extraordinary portions of his story rest almost entirely on unverified second-hand testimony from an unidentified nurse whose existence has never been established. They also point to changes in Dennis’s account over time, especially regarding the nurse’s name and fate, as reducing its reliability.
