The photographs themselves
The Fort Worth photographs remain one of the few pieces of physical evidence connected to the case. Marcel later argued that they documented a staged substitution, whereas Cavitt accepted them as an accurate representation of the recovered debris.

One possibility is that Marcel genuinely remembered extraordinary features that Cavitt overlooked or interpreted differently. Supporters of this view argue that individuals can focus on different aspects of the same event, particularly when operating under unfamiliar circumstances.
Another possibility is that memory changed over time. Marcel’s most detailed descriptions emerged more than thirty years after the recovery, after Roswell had become a major subject within UFO research. Memory research shows that repeated interviews, exposure to later narratives and reconstruction over long periods can unintentionally alter recollections without implying deliberate deception.
A third possibility is that each man experienced different portions of the recovery. Marcel may have handled pieces that Cavitt did not examine closely, although available evidence does not clearly establish such a division of material.
Finally, some historians suggest that Cavitt’s account remained comparatively stable because it aligned with his original understanding of the event, whereas Marcel later reinterpreted the significance of what he had seen. For historians and sceptical investigators, Cavitt presents an equally important problem for extraordinary interpretations.
