Why long balloon trains were frequently lost

Early Mogul operations were experimental rather than routine. The programme’s purpose was to discover whether long-duration acoustic surveillance from high altitude was even practical, so launch procedures and equipment were still evolving.

Several factors made losses common.

Complex flight behaviour. A train containing many balloons did not necessarily rise or descend uniformly. Individual balloons could burst at different times, changing the lift and altering the flight path unexpectedly.
