Why the Majestic 12 Documents Looked Real

Introduction

The so-called Majestic 12 (MJ-12) papers became one of the most influential document collections in UFO history because they appeared to offer official confirmation that the US government had recovered extraterrestrial technology following the Roswell incident. How the documents entered public circulation

The MJ-12 story emerged in the mid-1980s rather than from a government archive with documented provenance. In December 1984, television producer Jaime Shandera reportedly received an anonymous roll of undeveloped 35 mm film. After developing it, he found photographs of what became known as the “Eisenhower Briefing Document”, supposedly prepared in 1952 to brief President-elect Dwight D. The US National Archives examined the frequently cited Cutler–Twining memorandum, a document allegedly linking Robert Cutler, President Eisenhower’s Special Assistant, with MJ-12. Archivists identified several unusual features:
