Introduction
Could a Project Mogul balloon launched from Alamogordo realistically have reached the ranch where Mac Brazel reported finding debris near Roswell? This question has become one of the central technical tests of the military’s explanation for the Roswell incident. Because no complete tracking record survives for the relevant balloon launch, investigators have relied on historical weather observations, launch logs, atmospheric science and later trajectory reconstructions to estimate whether such a flight was physically plausible. The resulting picture is neither definitive nor arbitrary: it suggests that a Mogul balloon train could have drifted into the general Roswell region under favourable upper-level winds, but the exact route, landing point and timing cannot be reconstructed with certainty because key tracking data were never preserved or never existed.[Muller Lab]muller.lbl.govMuller Lab Project MogulMuller Lab Project Mogul
Launch location and the reported debris area
The candidate launch identified in the 1994 US Air Force report was a Project Mogul balloon train released from Alamogordo Army Air Field on 4 June 1947. The debris later recovered by rancher Mac Brazel lay on the Foster Ranch, roughly northwest of Roswell and around 70 miles (110 km) from the launch area, depending on the precise locations used for measurement. The Air Force concluded that this distance fell comfortably within the range achieved by other Mogul flights launched from Alamogordo during the summer of 1947.[Muller Lab]muller.lbl.govMuller Lab Project MogulMuller Lab Project Mogul
This geographical argument is strengthened by surviving operational records showing that several Mogul balloon trains descended east of White Sands rather than remaining over the proving ground. The programme’s operators eventually became sufficiently concerned about balloons landing outside restricted military areas that they sought permission to continue launches despite repeated recoveries in the Roswell region. That pattern demonstrates that long eastward or north-eastward drifts were operationally expected rather than exceptional.[Muller Lab]muller.lbl.govMuller Lab Project MogulMuller Lab Project Mogul
The difficulty is that the specific flight identified as the likely Roswell source was not successfully recovered or continuously tracked. Instead of a complete flight log, investigators must combine partial documentary evidence—including Albert Crary’s field diary—with later meteorological analysis and comparisons with neighbouring launches.
Using winds to estimate balloon drift
Unlike an ordinary weather balloon, a Mogul train consisted of many balloons carrying radar reflectors, instrumentation and acoustic equipment suspended over a considerable vertical distance. During ascent it passed through several atmospheric layers, each with different wind directions and speeds.
This matters because surface winds alone reveal little about the eventual flight path. Critics have sometimes argued that local winds on the launch day pointed away from the Foster Ranch. Charles B. Moore, one of the original Mogul engineers, responded that such reasoning ignores the dominant influence of stratospheric winds. From his experience operating the programme, the higher-altitude summer winds above New Mexico generally flowed from west to east, carrying balloon trains much farther than their initial low-level headings suggested.[LiquiSearch]liquisearch.comLiqui Search Air Force Reports On The Roswell UFO IncidentAir Force Reports On The Roswell UFO Incident - Mogul Flight 4 Reconstruction…
To examine the question decades later, Moore reconstructed the probable trajectory using:
- historical weather observations from June 1947;
- recorded winds from later Mogul flights;
- launch timing preserved in project documentation;
- known balloon performance characteristics; and
- corrections to some original observational data.
His reconstruction suggested that after climbing through variable lower-level winds, the balloon train would likely have entered more consistent upper-air flow capable of carrying it towards the general Roswell area before descending.[LiquiSearch]liquisearch.comLiqui Search Air Force Reports On The Roswell UFO IncidentAir Force Reports On The Roswell UFO Incident - Mogul Flight 4 Reconstruction…
An important aspect of Moore’s work involved identifying what he believed was a systematic error in the original New York University reduction of some theodolite observations. He argued that improper treatment of local magnetic declination altered recorded azimuths by roughly 12 degrees, affecting calculated altitude and trajectory estimates. Applying corrected values produced a flight path he regarded as more consistent with known atmospheric conditions and later Mogul launches.[LiquiSearch]liquisearch.comLiqui Search Air Force Reports On The Roswell UFO IncidentAir Force Reports On The Roswell UFO Incident - Mogul Flight 4 Reconstruction…
Why trajectory reconstruction remains uncertain
Although Moore’s reconstruction is often cited in support of the Mogul explanation, it is not equivalent to a modern GPS track.
Several limitations constrain every retrospective model:
- Incomplete launch documentation. Only fragments of operational records survive for the candidate flight.
- No continuous tracking. The balloon was apparently lost before its complete path could be documented.
- Sparse meteorological observations. Upper-air measurements from 1947 were relatively limited compared with modern weather datasets.
- Uncertain equipment configuration. Historians continue to debate exactly which components—including radar reflectors and instrument packages—were attached to the launch in question.[LiquiSearch]liquisearch.comLiqui Search Air Force Reports On The Roswell UFO IncidentAir Force Reports On The Roswell UFO Incident - Mogul Flight 4 Reconstruction…
Because of these uncertainties, route reconstruction produces a probability range rather than an exact crash location. Atmospheric modelling can demonstrate that reaching the Roswell vicinity was physically plausible, but it cannot identify the precise point where debris ultimately landed.
The principal historical disagreement
The debate today centres less on whether winds could carry a balloon towards Roswell than on whether the particular launch identified by the Air Force actually matches the documentary record.
Supporters of the Mogul explanation argue that:
- the reconstructed trajectory is compatible with historical wind conditions;
- the debris descriptions broadly resemble Mogul components such as foil-covered radar reflectors, balloon material and lightweight structural elements; and
- other Mogul launches demonstrably landed in the same general region.[Muller Lab]muller.lbl.govMuller Lab Project MogulMuller Lab Project Mogul
Critics counter that surviving documentation for the proposed launch is incomplete and that Crary’s diary contains entries which they interpret differently, leading them to question whether the specific “Flight 4” identified in later Air Force reports existed in the form described or carried the equipment necessary to match the reported debris. They argue that the reconstruction therefore rests partly on inference rather than direct observation.[LiquiSearch]liquisearch.comLiqui Search Air Force Reports On The Roswell UFO IncidentAir Force Reports On The Roswell UFO Incident - Mogul Flight 4 Reconstruction…
Importantly, this disagreement concerns historical reconstruction rather than basic aerodynamics. Both sides generally accept that balloon trains launched from Alamogordo could travel significant distances under prevailing upper-air winds; the dispute concerns which launch, if any, produced the Foster Ranch debris.
What the route reconstruction actually demonstrates
Viewed strictly as a historical dataset, the reconstructed flight path neither conclusively proves nor disproves the Mogul explanation. Instead, it establishes three evidence-based points.
First, atmospheric conditions in early June 1947 were compatible with a balloon train drifting from Alamogordo into the broader Roswell area. Second, comparable Mogul launches were known to descend east of White Sands, making such a landing operationally credible rather than extraordinary. Third, the absence of a complete tracking record prevents investigators from reconstructing an exact recovery chain from launch to Brazel’s ranch.[lbl.gov]muller.lbl.govMuller Lab Project MogulMuller Lab Project Mogul
For historians, the route reconstruction therefore functions as a plausibility test rather than a definitive identification. It narrows the range of realistic explanations by showing that the proposed balloon trajectory is physically possible, while also illustrating the limits of reconstructing a single 1947 flight from incomplete weather observations and fragmentary operational records.
