Introduction
Karl Pflock occupies an unusual place in Roswell research because he did not begin as a committed sceptic. Instead, he approached the case as a UFO researcher who thought an extraterrestrial explanation might ultimately prove correct. After years of examining witness testimony, military records, photographs, Project Mogul documentation and competing Roswell investigations, he gradually concluded that the evidence no longer supported an alien crash. His change of mind was therefore not a sudden conversion but the result of testing claims that had initially appeared persuasive against documentary evidence and internal inconsistencies. Why an extraterrestrial crash first seemed plausible
Pflock entered Roswell research during a period when the extraterrestrial interpretation appeared to be gaining momentum. Jesse Marcel’s recollections of unusual debris, the Army Air Forces’ brief “flying disc” press release in July 1947, and a growing collection of witness interviews convinced many researchers that the official weather-balloon explanation was incomplete.
Unlike investigators who began from a firmly sceptical position, Pflock regarded UFO reports as a legitimate subject of study and continued throughout his career to believe that some UFO sightings might represent genuine unexplained phenomena. His eventual rejection of Roswell as an alien event therefore did not reflect a broader rejection of UFO research. Testing the second-site and body claims
The turning point came as Pflock examined the evidence for the alleged second crash location and the stories of recovered alien bodies.
He found that these claims rested largely on testimony collected decades after 1947 rather than on contemporary documents or physical evidence. As more interviews accumulated, the narratives also became increasingly elaborate, introducing multiple recovery sites, additional military units and detailed descriptions of alien bodies that had not appeared in the earliest Roswell accounts.
Several factors proved especially important in changing his assessment:

Pflock eventually concluded that the alleged body recovery depended on a chain of witnesses whose stories could not be independently verified and whose recollections had evolved over many decades.
Why the balloon explanation ultimately prevailed
As Pflock became less persuaded by the body accounts, he simultaneously became more convinced by the evidence linking the debris field to Project Mogul.
Project Mogul was a highly classified post-war programme using long trains of balloons equipped with radar reflectors and acoustic equipment to detect Soviet nuclear tests. Because the project remained secret in 1947, military personnel had reason to conceal its purpose even if the debris itself was relatively ordinary.
Several lines of evidence increasingly favoured this explanation in Pflock’s view.
First, the reported debris—foil, rubber, sticks and paper-backed reflective material—matched known Mogul components more closely than descriptions of an advanced spacecraft. Second, declassified records and archival work by researchers such as Robert Todd greatly expanded the documentary record surrounding Project Mogul, providing a concrete historical framework unavailable to earlier Roswell investigators. Pflock also attached increasing importance to methodological consistency. He argued that extraordinary claims required stronger evidence than recollections recorded forty or fifty years after the fact. Since the physical debris could be explained by a documented classified programme while the alien-body stories lacked comparable documentary support, he concluded that the simpler historical explanation was better supported.
From qualified believer to “anti-Roswellian”
Pflock’s mature position is often misunderstood because it is sometimes described simply as sceptical. In reality, he distinguished sharply between Roswell and the wider UFO question.
He continued to regard some UFO reports as genuinely unexplained, but he concluded that Roswell itself had become an example of how mythology can grow around a real historical incident. His work therefore became notable not because it rejected UFOs outright, but because it demonstrated that investigators could change their conclusions when a particular case no longer met their evidential standards.
What Pflock’s reversal reveals about Roswell research
Pflock’s changing views illustrate a broader divide within Roswell scholarship. Rather than treating every witness statement as equally reliable, he increasingly weighed testimony against contemporaneous documentation, classified military records and the chronology of when particular claims first appeared.
His final assessment rested on three connected conclusions:
- the Foster ranch debris was most plausibly associated with Project Mogul;
- the celebrated accounts of recovered alien bodies emerged much later and could not be independently verified;
- no surviving contemporary evidence demonstrated the recovery of an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
For supporters of the alien-crash interpretation, Pflock’s reversal remains controversial because it came from someone who had once expected the evidence to support their position.
